96 Candles Ceremony
The 96 Candles Ceremony was first held on the 100th anniversary of the disaster in 2002 at the Soldiers’ and Miners’ Memorial Church in the Village. It was been held every year since, but the location has been moved to the Windy Gully Cemetery where between 200 and 300 people gather on the night of the 31st July to remember those who perished on that day back in 1902 and to light a candle for each of the 96 victims.
